Unlike US resumes, Australian CVs are expected to include a referees section. Leaving it off — or writing "available on request" — can read as evasive to Australian recruiters.
How many referees?
At least two, ideally professional referees who managed you directly. A mix of a recent manager and a senior colleague works well.
How to format referees
- Full name
- Job title and company
- Phone number (Australian format)
- Email address
- Relationship to you (e.g. "Direct manager at …")
Why not "available on request"?
It adds a step for the recruiter and signals you may not have referees ready. Listing them shows confidence and saves time. Always ask your referees' permission first.
Building a CV from scratch? Our guided builder includes a referees section by default — we never write "available on request".
