Cover letter FAQs
Practical answers for Australian applications, without pretending one template works for every employer.
- How long should a cover letter be in Australia?
- Aim for one page, usually 250 to 400 words. Use three or four short paragraphs and keep every sentence relevant to the role, employer or evidence from your experience.
- Do Australian employers still expect a cover letter?
- Not every application requires one, but a tailored cover letter is useful when the ad requests it, when you are changing careers, or when you need to explain why your experience fits the role. Follow the instructions in the job ad first.
- Should I use the same cover letter for every job?
- No. Keep a strong base structure, then change the opening, employer reference, selected achievements and keywords for each job. A letter that could be sent to any company is unlikely to add value.
- What if I do not know the hiring manager's name?
- Use “Dear Hiring Manager” or address the relevant team. Do not guess a person's name or title. If the employer gives a contact person in the ad, use the exact spelling provided.
- Can CVMate write a cover letter without making things up?
- Yes. CVMate uses the experience you provide and the target job to draft the letter. You choose a faithful or enhanced writing style, and you should approve every claim before sending it.
